Sundae Steamboats

My mom let us borrow a fun kids' cookbook from her. It looks like it's from the seventies, from the looks of the pictures. (I just checked the copyright--1975. I'm good.) I let the kids pick something they wanted to make and they made it by themselves:

Sundae Steamboats

4 cups KIX
18 maraschino cherries
36 mini marshmallows
20 large marshmallows
2 Tbs butter or margarine
1/8 tsp salt
3 cups strawberry ice cream

Empty cereal into a large bowl. Poke a toothpick through a mini marshmallow, then a cherry, then a marshmallow.

Heat large marshmallows, butter, and salt in a medium saucepan until melted and smooth. Pour over cereal and stir.

Rub butter on hands and make six equal-sized portions of cereal mixture. Shape each part into a boat about 6 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide.

Place each boat on a dessert place and fill with 3 small scoops of ice cream. Poke 1 prepared toothpick into each scoop of ice cream. Serve right away.

We did them without the cherries, because we're not fans of maraschino cherries in our house. We also halved the recipe and made three boats.
The picture in the book looked more like an actual boat, but these kids couldn't care less. They made it themselves!

  1. That looks pretty yummy! I can't wait to make some with you guys when I get home!

  2. What an awesome little activity! I'm glad you included pictures.
